Mountain Heritage Day

Friday, September 28, 2007

Hello fellow WCU people,

My name is Nathan Marshburn. I am a first semester graduate student in the History Department at Western Carolina University. I also earned a B.A. from Western a few years ago, and it feels great to be back on campus. The memories have rushed back to me, but there are also tremendous changes that make Western an even better place to go to school.

Tomorrow is Mountain Heritage Day, and I encourage everyone to check it out. I've been out there in years past, and the food is absolutely terrific. Get in line early for the Cherokee fry bread. There is also good mountain music and living history demonstrations. Mountain Heritage Day is always a big event at WCU, and I'm sure this year will be no different.

Graduate students in the Music Department have a great thing going at Guadaloupe's Cafe on Main Street in Sylva. Each Monday night at 10 pm they get together and play jazz. Wells Gordon heads up the band on the bass, and Tiffany Lamb is usually out there playing the flute. Both of them are accomplished musicians. They perform formal recitals in the Coulter building once every week or two. It's free and very enjoyable to go see them.

Everyone be safe, study hard, and have fun until next time,

Nathan
